Water fountains are among the most popular feng shui cures and come in tabletop, free-standing, wall-mounted, and other styles of water features. In fact, almost any water feature can be used for feng shui benefit. Fountains introduce the powerful energy of water, a feng shui symbol of wealth and prosperity.
Fountains can be placed inside or outside the home or in an office or another workplace. Choose the location of your feng shui fountain carefully to provide the most nourishing energy and prevent imbalance or conflict.
The Benefits of a Feng Shui Fountain
Fountains are very popular in feng shui because they can add the energy of the water element, one of the five feng shui elements. The others are fire, earth, wood, and metal.
In feng shui, water can bring you wealth and prosperity. Its power is enhanced by its ability to change form—from liquid to solid to gas. It has freedom of movement or expression. Every living thing on earth relies on water for life. By activating the water element in your home or office, you can nourish chi energy, enhance your life journey, foster new beginnings, and promote abundance.
Choosing a Feng Shui Fountain
For a fountain to be used as a feng shui cure, the fountain does not have to look Chinese or Asian. In fact, none of your feng shui cures need to be Asian in design to bring good feng shui energy. It is best when the fountain works harmoniously with your home decorating style.
Fountains can be made of almost any material, such as metal, stone, wood, ceramic, plastic, and even concrete. Choose a good-quality fountain that has a silent motor as well as a design that is easy to keep clean. Avoid fountains with sharp edges or corners. Small fountains that hold less than a gallon of water must be topped off daily or more often. Fountains with larger basins need less frequent refilling.
A great way to strengthen the beneficial energy (called sheng chi) of your fountain is to place some feng shui crystals or stones in the fountain's basin. You can also choose a fountain that disperses essential oils into the air.
Where to Place Your Feng Shui Fountain
The best location for your feng shui fountain is determined by the bagua, or the feng shui energy map of your space, as well as the interplay of the five feng shui elements. In general, the best areas to place your feng shui fountain are the east, southeast, and north areas of the home or office, which are the areas most often concerning health and family, wealth and money, and your career.
East: This is the health and family area and is home to the bagua element of wood. Wood is nourished by the water element. A cure in this area promotes physical, spiritual, and mental health and helps maintain peace and harmony within the family.
Southeast: Southeast is the area of wealth and money or abundance. It shares the element of wood with the east bagua area. Placing a fountain in the southeast area is good not only for monetary wealth and abundance but also a wealth of blessings.
North: The north area is associated with your career and path in life. Its element is water and is the perfect place for a water fountain.
Where Not to Place a Feng Shui Fountain
A fountain can bring nourishing energy to your home, but it can also create problems if it is not put in the right place. The main locations to avoid putting a fountain are the south bagua area, the bedroom, and underneath staircases.
It is not advisable to place a fountain or any water feature in the south area because this area needs the strong energy of the fire element. If you put water here, it creates conflicting energy—water puts outs fire in the five-element cycle. This can impede the flow of good feng shui energy in your home.
It is also not good to have a water feature in a bedroom, regardless of the bedroom's feng shui location in the home. The water element can bring worry and sorrow into the bedroom and can contribute to colds and respiratory problems. Also, do not place a fountain in an area directly below a bedroom. If a fountain is in a room adjacent to a bedroom, you should not hear the fountain from the bedroom, particularly while you sleep.
Finally, do not position a fountain directly under a staircase, as this can promote negative energy that can lead to health problems and other misfortunes for the children of the household.
