                                                          सतयुग की समाप्ति के समय दैत्य अमरूवा महान प्रतापी मायावी और वरदानी था। उसके अत्याचार से सृष्टि में हाहाकार मच गया, देवताओं के साथ महासंग्राम हुआ, देवता पराजित हो गये, उन्होने महा शक्ति की स्तुति की आदि शक्ति जगदंबा सिंह वाहिनी दुर्गा प्रगट हुई और उन्होंने नौ रूप धारण किया उनके साथ दस महाविद्या और अन्य सभी शक्तियाँ प्रगट हुई। दैत्यों के साथ पुनः महासंग्राम छिड गया | पांच हजार वर्ष तक लगातार युद्ध हुआ। दैत्य अमरूवा के प्राण संकट में देख युद्ध छोडकर भागा। राह में देखता है कि किसी मृत गऊ के देह का पिंजर पडा है - उसे लगा कि इस पिंजर में शरण लूँ तो ये देव-देवी नजदीक ना आएंगे। अमरूवा उस पिजंर में समा गया। देवी शक्तियाँ पीछा करते वहाँ पर आयीं देखा शत्रु गौ के पिंजर में जा घुसा है, सभी ठिठक कर वहीँ खडी हो गयीं, मृत गौ का पिंजर अशुद्ध माना जाता है। इस अशुद्ध पिंजर से दैत्य को निकालना वह भी पिंजर में घुसकर असंभव है। बाहर निकाले बिना वध भी नहीं किया जा सकता ऐसी विषम स्थिति देवी शक्तियाँ मजबूरी में हाथ मलने लगी। हथेली पर हथेली की रग
